Neurodiversity-Affirming Counseling & Play Therapy
At Nourish Counseling Studio, we provide neurodiversity-affirming counseling, play therapy, and parent support for children, teens, and families. We support Autistic children, ADHD children, and neurodivergent children whose nervous systems, sensory needs, communication styles, emotional experiences, and ways of moving through the world may not always be understood by others.
Our approach is warm, playful, developmentally responsive, and grounded in respect for your child’s whole self. We do not believe children need to be “fixed” to be supported. We believe children need to be understood, accepted, and given tools that honor who they are.
Support That Looks Beneath the Behavior
Many families come to us because their child is struggling with big emotions, anxiety, meltdowns, shutdowns, school stress, transitions, sensory overwhelm, social challenges, behavioral concerns, or difficulty communicating what they need.
Sometimes children are described as defiant, dramatic, too sensitive, aggressive, avoidant, impulsive, rigid, or hard to reach. Through a neurodiversity-affirming and nervous system-informed lens, we look deeper.
Behavior is communication. A child who is melting down, shutting down, running away, refusing, yelling, hiding, clinging, or acting out is often a child whose nervous system is overwhelmed and asking for support.
At Nourish, we work to understand what your child’s behavior is telling us instead of focusing only on how to make the behavior stop.
A Nervous System-Informed Approach
When children feel safe, connected, and regulated, they have more access to the skills they need. Communication, flexibility, frustration tolerance, problem-solving, and cooperation are all harder when a child’s brain and body are in survival mode.
Our therapists support children in building emotional awareness, regulation, confidence, self-understanding, and coping skills in ways that are developmentally appropriate and meaningful to them.
This may include helping your child:
- Understand and communicate their feelings and needs
- Build regulation tools that fit their nervous system
- Navigate transitions and unexpected changes
- Strengthen confidence and self-advocacy
- Develop flexible thinking without shame or pressure
- Explore sensory needs and supports
- Build connection in relationships
- Work through anxiety, frustration, grief, trauma, or stress
We focus on connection before correction, regulation before expectation, and support before demands.
Play Therapy for Neurodivergent Children
Play therapy allows children to communicate, process, practice, and heal in a way that fits their developmental stage. For many neurodivergent children, play, movement, creativity, special interests, sensory exploration, and symbolic expression can be more meaningful than traditional talk therapy alone.
In sessions, children are not expected to sit still, make eye contact, answer a long list of questions, or explain themselves like small adults. Therapy is adapted to the child.
Depending on your child’s needs, counseling may include child-centered play therapy, AutPlay-informed interventions, expressive arts, sandtray, movement, games, sensory-informed activities, storytelling, coping skills practice, and parent-child support.
We do not force eye contact, suppress stimming, shame sensory needs, or treat neurodivergent traits as problems to eliminate. Instead, we create space for children to feel safe, respected, and supported as they build skills.
AutPlay-Informed Support
Our neurodiversity-affirming work may be informed by AutPlay Therapy, an integrative play therapy approach designed to support Autistic, ADHD, and neurodivergent children and their families.
AutPlay-informed counseling can support emotional regulation, sensory awareness, social understanding, self-advocacy, anxiety, flexible thinking, parent-child connection, and family support.
This approach allows us to support the whole child, including their nervous system, relationships, strengths, sensory needs, and developmental differences.
Parent Support and Family Collaboration
Supporting a neurodivergent child can be beautiful, exhausting, confusing, and overwhelming, sometimes all in the same hour. Parents may come to us after trying reward charts, consequences, behavior plans, parenting scripts, school strategies, or other approaches that did not fully fit their child.
We help parents better understand what is happening underneath their child’s behavior and identify realistic strategies that fit their actual family.
Parent support may include:
- Understanding meltdowns, shutdowns, and dysregulation
- Supporting transitions, routines, and daily stress points
- Responding to aggression, refusal, avoidance, or anxiety
- Building connection after difficult moments
- Identifying sensory and emotional needs
- Supporting siblings and family dynamics
- Advocating for your child at school
- Creating practical tools for home, school, and community settings
We are not here to judge you or hand you a glittery behavior chart and send you into the wilderness. We are here to help you understand your child, support your nervous system too, and find strategies that feel possible in real life.
Your Child Is Not Broken
At Nourish, we believe children thrive when they are understood.
Neurodiversity-affirming care means we honor your child’s full humanity. We listen to behavior as communication. We support regulation before expectation. We value connection over control. We help children and families build skills without shame.
Your child is not broken. Your family is not failing. You do not have to figure this out alone.
